Filmed in a semi-documentary style (and partially directed by Anthony Mann) and based on a true police case, this is a taut, engrossing suspense drama that deals with a battle of wits between the Los Angeles Police and a true criminal genius. Richard Basehart is the man who "walked by night," a highly intelligent and clever individual, with an expertise in electronics and police tactics. His anti-social behavior (which include killing one policeman and crippling another) make him the object of the Los Angeles Police...a manhunt that is all the more difficult when the subject leaves no clues and has never been photographed! The manhunt comes to its conclusion in the great pipes of the L.A. sewer system. 79 minutes, B/W, 1948.
